Putney is a suburb of Sydney located 12 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. Its local government area is the City of Ryde.
The area of Putney and Ryde was originally known as Eastern Farms and then Kissing Point by British Colonists. The name Putney is derived from its namesake Putney on the River Thames in London.
