Petersham

Petersham is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney. Petersham is located 6 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Inner West Council.

History

In 1793 Major Francis Grose ordered the area, which he named after his birthplace in England, to be cleared to allow for farming of corn and wheat. Crops thrived here and farming continued here until the arrival of the railway line in 1857, when much of the land was sold and subdivided for residential development.

Transport

Petersham railway station is on the Inner West & Leppington Line of the Sydney Trains network. Travelling west, all station services run from the City Circle to Homebush and Parramatta. The station includes an ornate iron pedestrian bridge over the train line. Petersham is also well served by various bus connections.

Recreation

Petersham Park is a great spot for walking or cycling. There is also a small row of shops on New Canterbury Road which leads to Audrey Street near the railway station with Portuguese Produce as well as cafes and bakeries. More shopping facilities can be found in nearby Marrickville and Leichhardt.

Schools

Petersham is served by Petersham Public School, among others, as well as a variety of private schools and pre-schools.
