Haberfield

Haberfield is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney. Haberfield is located 6.5 kilometres west of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of the Inner West Council.

Haberfield features a range of heritage-listed homes, many built in the Federation architectural style with spacious interiors. The suburb is characterised by its well- preserved street-scapes and large blocks often with landscaped gardens.

The property market is relatively stable and is considered to be premium, with prices reflecting the suburb’s status as a highly sought after area to live in due to its desirable location and community atmosphere.

History

In 1901 the area was purchased by Richard Stanton and subdivided to create a garden suburb, in the hopes this would help to combat the spread of the bubonic plague by encouraging fresh air in the city. He named the area Haberfield after his family in England. The majority of houses in the suburb are protected by a heritage order, meaning that many of the original Victorian and Federation style buildings still remain, and any renovation work must follow strict guidelines to ensure that work is in keeping with the style of the architecture.

Transport

There is a fast train service from nearby Ashfield, although Haberfield is well serviced by buses into the City and CBD.

Recreation

Haberfield is a suburb that offers a charming blend of shopping and recreational activities with a distinct italian influence. There are many shopping strips with an array of italian pasticcerias, restaurants and providores. There are also a variety of specialty shops.

There are plenty of green spaces including reserves for walks and family outdoor activities. The suburb is known for its heritage listed architecture creating a picturesque backdrop.

Schools

Haberfield has three primary schools but no High Schools. Two of the schools are Public Schools; being Haberfield Public School and Dobroyd Public School. The third is the St Joan of Arc Catholic School.
